Ratings Up 21% in Most Recent Quarter

Chelsea Lately, E! Entertainment Television’s late-night comedy talk show featuring comedienne and best-selling author Chelsea Handler, will continue with new episodes through 2009, officials said Thursday.

Chelsea Lately, which debuted in July 2007, airs weeknights at 11:30 p.m. Chelsea Lately continues to show significant growth, including a household ratings gain of 21% in third quarter from its performance a year ago. The strongest demo for the show is women 18 to 34.

The half-hour show offers an irreverent look at entertainment news and celebrity culture. A roundtable of guests join Handler each show to discuss top breaking-news stories, celebrity updates and other hot topics of the day.

Chelsea Lately also features one-on-one celebrity interviews and comedic field packages. Upcoming guests include T.I., Lance Bass, Ali Landry, Jenny McCarthy, Sean William Scott, Amy Sedaris and Tom Bergeron.

THE 21ST QUESTION:
You’ve been a vocal opponent of the institution of marriage. What finally convinced you that marriage is for suckers?

HANDLER:
I don’t have a problem with marriage itself. I just don’t want to get divorced. If I never get married, then divorce will never be an option. I love going to weddings, I just feel ripped off when I hand over a big gift and then I find out a few months later that they got divorced. I want to call them and say, “Can I get my gift back?” I know people who’ve been married three times. I’m not going to three weddings if I’m required to bring three wedding gifts! You get one gift, that’s it. My parents never got divorced, but I think divorce is easier for people who have a lot of money. Our family wasn’t poor, but we were by no means wealthy. If my mom had more money, who knows what she would’ve done. When you’re in a situation of financial dependence, your hands are tied. I just never want to be in a place where divorce is my only way out of a bad relationship. A divorce is painful and bad and there’s a lot of paperwork required, and I have a huge aversion to paperwork.”

On Saturday night, the Palms concert venue, Pearl, held its first book signing. Hundreds of fans lined up to get an autographed copy of Chelsea Handler’s "Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea?"  Her comedy was perfect for the Palms, because her audience has a large percentage of attractive women, and, as she told me, "my fans in general are pretty big drinkers."

Of course, Vegas turned that up a notch for her sold-out show: "Everyone here is a little bit drunker. People in Vegas have been drinking all day."

When I pointed out to her that Artie Lang also loved his hard-drinking Vegas audience, Handler would have none of that comparison. "He is fat," she said.

Despite her jokes about drinking, Handler proved a hard worker after performing, spending close to two hours signing about 400 books and T-shirts for her fans.

She also had a perfect Vegas moment at the Palms when a waitress approached her boyfriend to make a pass at the couple: "I think she had heard that I propositioned someone last time I was here. But she probably had me confused with Denise Richards."
